Scott’s Birthday Jam Session #2 – Oct. 2, 1988
Here is the second song, “Straight No Chaser,” from the 1988 birthday party. Most notable is the participation of such great pros as flutist Jim Walker (who at the time was a key member of Free Flight), guitarist Jimmy Stewart (formerly with Gabor Szabo and a busy studio guitarist) and bassist Buell Neidlinger (who played with virtually all of the greats in jazz, classical music and bluegrass). Also in the band are the late trumpeter Art Troncozo, pianist Al Cresswell, drummer Thomas Magee and me on tenor. Also in the group is Jon Nelson, a multi-instrumentalist heard here on clarinet, playing pretty outside. Two things in particular to look for. Look at Jim Walker’s expression while trying to understand the clarinet solo. And note the Happy Birthday quote right when a balloon was getting a close up, it was pure luck. Bob Mitchell, a fine pianist who will pop up on some of the other jams, did the camerawork.
